Greytown Racing Pigeon Club news

TO what age do pigeons live? An interesting question.

In my loft I have three pigeons which are 15 years old, one of 14, three of 13 and five of 12, and so on. Obviously they do not all fill their eggs anymore, but they have earned their perches and live in peaceful retirement, The mother of the family lived until the age of 20 and looked like a youngster. I have read of a pigeon living until the age of 25.

Obviously one does not breed from very old pigeons as the babies produced would be and#034;hag riddenand#034; and certainly lack the necessary to become a good racing pigeon.

It is always better to breed from younger stock as the youngsters would be more virile. If one wanted youngsters from an older pair, rather float the eggs under a younger pair to raise as the older birds do not have the energy to feed the youngsters properly and one would end up with a loft full of scrags.

It is basically the same with racing. The younger pigeon will move a lot faster while the older, experienced bird will travel at his own pace, especially over the shorter distance. This is when the clever fancier uses him for the long, hard endurance race where his set pace does not tire him out against the younger bird who wants to rush.

Look at marathon runners - the early rush falls by the wayside, while the steady pacer is to the fore.

To those who have inquired about Attie Joubert, I am pleased to inform you that he is making good progress and is almost back to his old self.

Until next time - good flying
