IT is different, healthy, fun and a great family activity – the “Firebreak Fun 5” walks, runs, cycling outings which have been introduced and organised in Greytown by Hilary Bruss. Four have taken place in August so far with the final one on Monday 31 August from the Green Bar.

In an interview with the Greytown Gazette, Hilary, who has an events-organising background, said when she came to Greytown and found that to take part in any races would involve a long drive, she decided to do something about it.

“This is my favourite time of year to train because all the firebreaks are neat and this makes running or riding an absolute pleasure.”

These outings are also a great opportunity for families to be active together, and for anyone who is nervous to run on their own the event provides company and fun while at the same time being in the open and getting healthy.

Night running is very different adding a new dimension to it, but it is a fun and safe evening activity. There is however, one unbreakable compulsory rule – headlights to be worn by every participant.

These firebreak runs are open to all and in any mode of activity. Cost is R40 to enter on the day. Children under 12 get in free.

There is a seconding table half way with refreshments and food, and after the run each participant is treated to a bowl of home-made soup and gluhwein.

Four of the five venues for August have been used, and those who took part expressed their thanks to the Masons and Hohls families for allowing runs to take part on their properties. The final event will take place on Monday 31 August from the Green Bar, followed by the main series prize giving and a braai.
