BACK from her trip to the Austrian Alps, after winning a spot in the prestigious Arved Fuchs Foundation International Climate Exchange contest for her project on creating awareness about over-fishing in South Africa using social media, our Ayanda Nzama writes: “The International Climate Expedition in Austria was such a great experience. The privilege of being able to represent South Africa at an environmental expedition was a huge honour and an adventure I will never forget.

“I had first-hand experience with scientists from the University of Innsbruck who gave us presentations on global warming, rising sea levels and oil exploitation in the Arctic. I had the pleasure of meeting participants from Poland, Bangladesh, Turkey, Germany, Cyprus, and many more. We all had fun on our long hikes in the Alps, where we saw the breath-taking fauna and flora of the Tyrolese Alps, as well as seeing beautiful glaciers and learning more about them. The amount of knowledge and experience I gained was immeasurable and I am proud to be back home in our beautiful country as an ambassador for change and to support our own environmental needs.”

On the sports front, Christél Brooks, riding Prince Caspian, participated in the SANESA Qualifier 5 at Canterbury - the last qualifier of the year - and achieved a first in show-jumping one-metre, two-phase and a second in show-jumping one-metre competition class.

The high-school girls played soccer against Wartburg (1-1, with Zothani Dlamini scoring for Hermannsburg), against Greytown High (2-0) and against Grace College (0-3). In tennis news the boys played Treverton and won 52-26 in games while the girls played St Anne’s and lost 12-36 in games.

Correction: On 27 July the caption for the photograph of the KZN Youth Choir mentioned five Hermannsburg choristers, when in fact there were no fewer than seven Hermannsburg choristers in the choir, as well as two old pupils. We apologise for the error. The Hermannsburg choristers were Stephan Küsel, Laura Zick, Danielle Schweiger, Rupert Meyer, Meike Meyer, Christel Brüggemann and Rhonda Christiansen, while Tristan Hiestermann and Tommy Leigh represented our old pupils
