THE Nature Club, comprising 17 pupils and four teachers, left for the Eshowe Environmental Centre two weekend’s ago, arriving in the evening. They began their stay with a movie about the fascinating symbiosis of the fig wasp and the fig tree. The next morning they went on an early-morning walk through the Dlinza Forest, which is right next to the environmental centre, where they saw the endangered spotted thrush, many birds and a red duiker. They enjoyed the board walk in the forest and the view above the forest. That afternoon they played games and then relaxed in the garden and on the sports fields, before going star-gazing in the evening. On the Sunday they left for Mtunzini, where they walked some more, this time through the coastal forest and onto the beach. The spotted thrush surprised them by showing up again. The rest of the morning was spent swimming in the sea and enjoying the beach before the group returned to Hermannsburg.Bushbuck and Reedbuck ran, jumped and threw their best at the recent inter-house athletics, where a change in the age groups (to fall in line with Athletics South Africa age groups), meant new records across the board. In the end, Reedbuck took the Spirit Cup and the honours as the overall winners, albeit by the narrowest of margins.Julian Königkrämer and Ronja Zick were junior victor and victrix ludorum respectively, while the senior winners were Sven Klar and Lydia Köhne.Age-group champions were Christopher Dell and Siena Kimble (U11), Ethan Dell and Tegan Waller (U13), Sven Klar and Lydia Köhne (U15), Kabelo Molefe and Meike Meyer (U17) and Michael Zunckel and Ilse Ortmann (U19). We are grateful to the generous donors who enabled us to introduce a range of new awards with the trophies they donated. In the primary school the new trophies were won by Julian Königkrämer (Bestall Trophy - Top Track Athlete) and Ronja Zick (Kimble Trophy - Top Field Athlete, Morgentau Trophy - Athlete of the Day), while in the high school, trophy winners were Isabella Klingenberg (Mel Klingenberg Trophy - Top Girl Track Athlete), Sven Klar (Landolf Klingenberg Trophy - Top Boy Track Athlete), Lydia Köhne (Ingrid Köhne Trophy - Top Girl Field Athlete) and Tobias von Seydlitz (Günther Köhne Trophy - Top Boy Field Athlete, Klar Family Trophy - Top Athlete of the Day). Thank you to officials and parents who came out to support our athletes.
