SCHULFEST - you simply had to be there. Great sport, great food and refreshments, an electric vibe and lots of visitors made this one of the most successful Schulfests ever.

At this year’s Schulfest we hosted several exciting and well-supported sporting tournaments - the most prestigious being the Spar KZN Regional Hockey Tournament in which our first team hockey girls finished fourth. Our congratulations go to Wartburg’s first team for winning this year’s tournament. Our U16 girls also had a nail-bitingly tournament, winning one game, drawing one and unfortunately losing two. Our U11 hockey girls did really well in their mini-tournament - winning three of their matches and drawing two, while our U9 girls showed skill by winning three of their matches, drawing one and losing one.

Seven-a-side rugby is alive and well again at Hermannsburg and we hosted a successful rugby tournament at Schulfest. Our boys proved that hard work and commitment pay off, making their school proud - our open side won three of their four games, while our U16 side won two of their three games.

The school’s cyclists are getting into gear. On Sunday 26 April, they did the Tour Durban, a 55km cyclocross that includes on-road and off-road sections. Joshua Zick came first in his age group, finishing in 2:30:9, while Dieter Volker had a run of bad luck with no fewer than three punctures and a 10-kilometre walk to the finish as a result. Mrs Waller had an unfortunate fall, but thanks go to the third member of our cycling team, Anna Kremnitzer, for calmly and efficiently organising medical attention. A huge thank you goes to Corné Hattingh and Bill Comins of Mascor and John Deere for sponsoring the cycling shirts, as well as to Anelda Uys for setting things up behind the scenes. Kate Elges of Ten0 designed the club logo - our cycling “okie” - for which we are very grateful. Thank you to the Filter family for the donation of the bicycle trailer and to David’s Midas for the signage. Our cycling team once again showed their mettle at the Greytown Mountain Bike Classic, improving their skills, and did a roaring trade on the Sunday washing bikes.

In other sports news the boys’ U15 hockey team drew 1-1 with Wembley College and the first team ended 0-3. The girls played against Wartburg last week and the first team ended 0-6, the second team 0-1, the U16 0-3 and the U14 1-2. The U13 girls’ played a day-night fixture at New Hanover, drawing four matches and losing three. The U9 girls’ played Greytown Junior, winning 6-1, and the U11 girls’ won 3-2 (Erika-Anne Edwards scoring all three goals).

Lastly, a big thank you once again to all who supported our Schulfest this year, and to the many parents, teachers and supporters of our school who donated products, money or their time into making it such a huge success.
