Life plus 22 years for murder

2015-05-13 06:00

A LIFE sentence plus 22 years was handed down by the Pietermaritzburg High Court last week on Futumuntu Ngcamu following the murder of Lungani Phakamani Mlongo in December 2014.

On 19 December the Mhlongo homestead in Mphise, Kranskop, was attacked. Lungani was shot and killed and his house set alight. Ngcamu was arrested shortly thereafter and an AK47 recovered from him.

Constable TS Mhkongo and Constable DS Nxele of Kranskop SAPS were the investigating officers in this high profile murder and attempted murder case.

They were successfully able to link, through ballistics, the firearm to the suspect.

The presiding judge found Ngcamu guilty of murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition on 8 May and sentenced him to life imprisonment for the murder, 15 years for illegal possession of firearm, five years for attempted murder and two years for illegal possession of ammunition.

Kranskop Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Minnaar and the branch commander of detectives Warrant Officer Sibiya said they are proud of these two young detectives.

Minnaar told the Greytown Gazette these types of attacks are prevalent in the Kranskop area and normally take place at night when suspects cannot be easily identified.

The sentence will send out a strong message that such attacks have dire consequences and that no stone will be left unturned until all suspects are brought to book.
