THE Umvoti Fire Protection Association (UFPA), Mondi and Buffalo Protection Services held a fire awareness presentation and demonstration at Wembley College on 14 August. Grade R to Grade 7 pupils were given a talk by UFPA fire protection officer, Charles Haden, on awareness which highlighted the dangers of fire.

Sam Pieterse and the Mondi proto team gave a demonstration of fire-fighting equipment and there was much excitement when the water canon was demonstrated, especially as it made a rainbow.

There was tremendous excitement when Buffalo Protection Services gave a tracking demonstration with UFPA tracker dog, Smirrie and his handler Cole Ngcongo.

A volunteer was requested for this demonstration and nearly every pupil put up their hand to volunteer. Leah Tedder was the “suspect” and went around the school block to hide behind some bushes, after which Smirrie and Cole tracked where Leah had run to hide.

Smirrie is trained not to bite a suspect, only to lead his handler to where the suspect is.

There were lots of questions asked by pupils, answered by Charles and Sam.

The fire awareness programme is an initiative carried out at all schools in the Umvoti district to educate children about fire awareness.
