ACTING on information received the SAPS arrested a 27-year old man in Msinga on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

On Sunday 7 June the Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police Task team and Msinga police arrested the man and recovered the firearms and ammunition.

KZN SAPS spokesperson said: “Police received information about men who were in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in the Esiphongweni and KwaLatha­ areas in Msinga.

The intelligence was operationalised and police arrested a suspect after he was found to be in possession of a high-calibre automatic rifle.

“The operation also resulted in the recovery of a shotgun, 303 rifle, 7.65 pistol and 30 rounds of ammunition.”

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the members for persevering in ridding our communities of these unlicensed firearms.

“It is important that we remove such firearms from the hands of criminals and despite all our efforts it is very disturbing­ to find that such large quantity of illegal firearms are still in circulation,” she said
