Not nearly enough rain - drought not over

2015-07-29 06:00

TWO days of unexpected rain brought minimal relief to the drought-stricken area, but a lot more rain is needed to end the drought. More than 70 millimetres were recorded in Greytown and surrounds. The impact on Lake Merthley – from last week’s 20% - now stands at 22%.

Commissioning of the four boreholes, which will feed the Kranskop road reservoir to supply water to Enhlalakahle and Solomon village residents has been delayed. According to Pradeep Ramlall of Umzinyathi District Municipality the contractors were unable to work for five days due to the inclement weather. The planned testing of these boreholes at the old polocrosse grounds will take place this week.

While every resident is co-operating and being innovative in saving water, there are still the irresponsible few who show no respect or responsibility towards their families and communities, who are stealing tanks, water, taps, etc., and vandalising various water sources.

With the proliferation of boreholes in Greytown this is a reminder to private bore-hole users that they must register them with the Department of Water and Sanitation by phoning 031 336 287.

Predictions of rain in the Accu Weather forecast for August: 4th, 5th (with snow), 21st 23rd, 28th, 29th and 30th. It will be interesting to check out how accurate the predictions are.

A legal requirement is for all private borehole owners to have a sign outside property stating “borehole water”In the meantime, please continue the good work and save water
