PERIDOT - pronounced pair-uh-doe - the August birthstone has a fascinating history. The ancient Romans called it “evening emerald” as its colour did not darken at night, but could still be appreciated by candle light.

It is a gem closely connected with ancient Egypt, and is said that the famous emeralds of Cleopatra were actually peridot.

The peridot was regarded as a gift of Mother Nature to celebrate the annual creation of a new world. Leaders who publicly wore peridot were in former times thought to be gentle, fair and wise.

Legend has it that Napoleon used peridot to assure Josephine of his undying love and admiration, which of course happened before he had their marriage annulled.

It covers a fair range of emotions and actions - bestowing peace and progress in oneand#039;s life, love, loyalty, commitment and harmony. It can be worn as a talisman to ward off evil.

On the health front peridot is said to heal the lungs, spleen, intestines, lymph and a breast of ailments. Amulets with peridot stones were said to be an effective remedy for asthma, sinus, thyroid, eye and liver infections

The traditional colour of the peridot is lime green.. Owing to its green hues, the stone has been associated with Biblical and Christian symbolism, as many elements of the religion and culture are associated with the colour green. Green represents nature, prosperity, life and progress.

The most expensive peridots are sparkling lime-green without brown or yellow hues. The color ranges from lime green to olive green, dark green and yellowish green. It is one of the few gemstones which comes in only one colour.

The depth of green depends on how much iron is contained in the crystal structure. Chrysolite is the golden yellow variant of peridot.

The gemstone has recently become popular again owing to its numerous qualities and its suitability for jewellery. Many gemologists estimate that large peridots rival Tanzanite and other gems in price.

Most gemstones of mineral origin are formed in the Earthand#039;s crust. But there are two exceptions - peridot and diamonds are formed much deeper in the Earth, in the region referred to as the mantle.

Peridot crystals form in magma from the upper mantle (20 to 55 miles deep), and are brought to the surface by tectonic or volcanic activity where they are found in extrusive igneous rock.

Diamonds were formed much deeper in the mantle (around 100 - 150 miles below the surface), at extreme temperatures and pressures.

Historically the volcanic island Zabargad in the Red Sea was the location of the most important deposit. It was exploited for 3 500 years before it was abandoned for many centuries. It was rediscovered around 1900 and has been heavily exploited ever since
