Tribute to Ivan Pepper

2015-05-27 06:00

Wellknown Greytonian Ivan Pepper died earlier this week, aged 93. He had been living at Arcadia for the past nine years.

Ivan first came to Greytown in 1946 after the war. He had served with the Umvoti Mounted Rifles, was captured and spent three years as a prisoner of war. He returned to work in the UMR regimental office. He married Ione Tatham in 1947, before moving away to work briefly for Huletts Sugar and then for Sappi. Ivan and Ione moved back to Greytown in 1980.

Ivan was deeply committed to his family. He and Ione were married for 57 years. He was always interested ini and proud of whatever his children and grandchildren did. He will be remembered for the many hours he sat beside the sports fields supporting and encouraging them. He also shared his great love for nature with them.

Ivan loved people and went out of his way to remember names and what was important to whomever he was talking to.

As a committed member of the SA Legion, Moths and UMR Comrades Association he served all of these bodies to ensure ex-servicemen were cared for, remembered and respected.

A memorial service will be held today, 27 May at 11am in St James Church.
