Umvoti Municipality ‘financially sound’

2015-09-02 06:00

“THIS serves as a notice to the Umvoti community regarding the municipality’s financial status in response to the leaked email published in last week’s Greytown Gazette article.

“This is to assure the public that the municipality is financially sound and is not bankrupt. There was a misinterpretation of information from the email that was sent to municipal staff as a caution to curb ‘nice-to-have’ items as per National Treasury Budget Circular.

“The email made no mention that the municipality had no funds or that it will not be able to pay salaries or any of it contractual liabilities.

“The municipality has closed the year with R40 million in the bank and investments, and R26 million as grant funds raised as a debtor to be recovered from National Fiscus. These funds were dedicated towards electrification projects for Muden, Woolstone and Ngome projects as a result of community unrest through protest, especially in the Muden area.

“The municipal council took a resolution in November 2014 under UMS 80 (14) to bridge-finance the electrification projects with internal funding in order to fast-track the electrification projects to the rural areas where, after 20 years of democracy, there are still some households without access to basic needs.

“The municipality’s Draft Annual Financial Statements as at 30 June, 2014, are available on the municipal website www.umvoti. to confirm the financial position of the municipality.’’
