Uses of old-fashioned Epsom salts

2015-04-29 14:17

EPSOM salts have been around for a long time.

Here are some interesting uses for it:

• Slugs and snails - wherever you see that silvery, slimy trail heading for your plants, scatter a handful of Epsom salts.

The snails and slugs will move to a new location.

• Fertiliser - a tablespoon added to the soil of your tomato, green pepper and chilli plants, etc., once a week, will make the fruits of your endeavours the envy of all your friends.

• Green, green grass of home. Epsom salts has magnesium and iron aplenty. Add two tablespoons to about three and a half litres of water, mix thoroughly and water your lawn with it. Then follow this with straight water to help the salts and water really soak in.

• Soaking in an Epsom salt bath is one of the easiest external ways to boost your magnesium and sulfate levels and detox your body.

Research studies have shown that magnesium is more easily absorbed through your skin then via your digestive tract. Just add two cups to your bath water and soak for at least 15 minutes, three times a week, to reap the benefits. Do not use soap as it will negatively interfere with the salts.

• Add ½ cup of Epsom salts to a large bowl and soak your feet or hands for about 20 minutes to

soothe aches, remove odours, soften rough skin, draw out splinters, relieve tired feet, relieve Athlete’s foot, treat toenail fungus and ease gout.

• For kitchen and bathroom tiles, mix equal parts of the salts and dish-washing liquid. Dab onto the offending tiling and rub well.

The tiles will come up clean and well sanitised too.
