Vodacom = no service

2015-08-26 06:00

IF you are reading this in the 26 August Greytown Gazette it is no thanks to the Gazette’s service provider, Vodacom. For the past few weeks the service has been appalling because with luck, two emails could be sent after which my computer had to be rebooted as the network dropped away.

But the Greytown Gazette Editor was not the only plaintive voice in the wilderness – Greytown service providers have been receiving plenty calls of complaint.

Then, the network died an unnatural death on Wednesday 19 August. Response to calls to whatever Vodacom contacts could be located was that “Vodacom was aware of a transmission problem in the area and was working on it ... we will investigate and come back to you.”

Thursday morning – no call-backs and still no network. Further desperate calls were made to customer care and to head office in Johannesburg. This is a similar story from each of the approximately six Vodacom employees I managed to speak to – “it will take seven to 14 days to sort out the problem - by 19 September all will be well”.

All requests to speak to anyone in top management at Vodacom head office were blocked .

An apoplectic Editor mentioned to each one in turn that this is a business (which is apparently of no concern to Vodacom) and noways could just shut down for seven to 14 days. A then desperate Editor managed to get MTN installed which operated for 48 hours. During this time there were no call backs from Vodacom employees and obviously no network.

On Thursday 20 August, at about 2pm a very pleasant technician rocked up – and after a while said he would go to Vodacom tower and check the problem, but would be in touch before the end of the business day. At 2pm on Friday 21 August he informed me all was working.

So if you are reading this in the 26 August Greytown Gazette – it is a thanks to MTN and no thanks to Vodacom.

PS: Tried to fax the above to Vodacom on 086 082 082 for comment and received voice mail “this number is unobtainable”. I spoke to customer care and head office - only number there – “please email” they said.
