CHARGES of water abuse have been opened with Greytown SAPS relating to two residences in Cooper Street, which were identified last Friday.

As can be seen from the photograph an inlet pipe has been installed to divert water around the meter, which means this consumer has not paid for a drop of the water he or she has used.

In a second case a number of small businesses were found to be illegally connected to one source. Although the Department of Water and Sanitation has Gazetted the penalties for water abuse, Umvoti is facing a major problem as disaster manager, Bheki Vilakazi, despite non- stop appeals, has not been given the relevant by-laws by Umzinyathi District Municipality.

This is hampering the prevention of water wastage, for instance the blatant daily washing of vehicles in Maitland Street with buckets of water collected from JoJo tanks in the area.

Despite urgent appeals, Umzinyathi has not supplied this much-needed information.

At the time of going to press 250 flow restricters had been installed starting last Thursday, this according to Pradeep Ramlall of Umzinyathi.

Although there is a slight improvement through supply from bore holes, this can only be sustained when all the restricters are installed, which is now being done.

An old stream has been rehabilitated and this water is now being pumped to the plant.

However, the message is still loud and clear - every drop counts until the rains come -please continue to save water, report leaks and stop the illegal waste of water
