ALTHOUGH it is hard to believe, the minute total of four millimetres recorded in August is not the lowest rainfall in the past nine years.

1.2mm was recorded in 2008/9 with 4.5mm in 2007/8. The 42-year mean recorded by Pannar research station is 29.41.

Hottest days were 28 and 31 August – both 31.2 and the coldest minimum 5.6 on 1 August.

As the month of September ends today the rainfall has been minimal. Although expectations were raised mid- month when there was a heavy downpour Pannar research station recorded just 23.4mm from the 16 to 21 September.

Here’s hoping that the rainbird, which has been very voluble throughout Greytown for the last few weeks, is not pretending and that there really is rain just waiting to fall on Umvoti
