A disaster waiting to happen

Sir, BELOW Greytown High School, on the Greytown-Muden road where hundreds of young children cross a busy highway every day on their way to and from school, is a tragedy waiting to happen.
Before the road was resurfaced a few years ago, traffic was slowed down by speed humps both above and below pupils’ crossing, and a pointsman was on duty. The humps were never replaced, and traffic now hurtles through this crossing during the morning and afternoon school rush- hour.

Occasionally someone is sent to assist children over this death trap, but is often on his cellphone or chatting to taxi drivers off-loading passengers. No hazard warnings are placed on either side of the crossing, and no reflective warning clothing is worn by this person. It is obvious that Umvoti Municipality, under whose jurisdiction this crossing falls, is unaware of the dangerous situation facing our children.

This is an appeal to the municipality to monitor the behaviour of the points man and to request the installation of flashing warning lights (as outside Maritzburg College) and rumble strips and speed humps above and below the crossing before headlines report: “Tragedy at school crossing as speeding lorry kills several children and maims numerous others”.

Exaggeration? Go see for yourself.
