About today’s IDP-Budget Roadshow

2017-05-17 06:02

IT would be a matter of considerable interest to be informed just how many members of the public responded to the request from Umvoti Municipality, published in the Greytown Gazette of 4 April, requesting input on the 2017/18 draft IDP-budget review.
This was followed by another public notice on 3 May  that all community members and stakeholders were invited to the IDP-budget roadshow to take place in Ward 12 on Wednesday 17 May at the Ehlanzeni sports field.
According to the IEC Ward 12, was added to Umvoti Municipality prior to the August elections - it was previously part of the Msinga Municipality (directions - take the Nadi Road, which is mainly gravel and keep going).

According to the municipality, as the public were already requested in April to respond to requests for developments in their wards, only one roadshow is necessary prior to the drafts being put to the council for acceptance.

For the past two weeks very glossy posters, featuring a portrait of the mayor, have been appearing in the wards as well as featuring strongly on social media.
On Monday this week the Greytown Gazette received a brochure containing an English version of the poster, a Zulu version, and a programme of the roadshow in Zulu. In this week’s issue there is a municipal advertisement or invitation to today’s roadshow on page 5. Anyone needing transport is requested to phone in.
Five mini buses have been allocated to each of the 12 wards to transport community members to the roadshow.

Another interesting aspect is an appeal sent out by the acting municipal manager to selected businesses in Umvoti requesting sponsorship for goods for the roadshow.
Apparently the first part of the roadshow will be a visit to six schools in Ward 12 to provide stationery, etc., plus toiletries. As the municipality will be providing - and will have to transport - a tent, appropriate décor, sound, electricity and lighting, chairs, catering for 2 000 people and 200 stakeholders it “humbly” requests sponsorship to donate the goods to the schools.

Is it inappropriate at this point to query if this is not one of the most expensive productions of a municipal draft IDP and budget roadshow?
The public might recall that just over three weeks ago an estimated R350 000 was spent on taking Umvoti councillors and officials to a workshop for four days at the four-star hotel on the coast replacing a local support enterprise booking made for the workshop that was abruptly cancelled.

Unfortunately, a Greytown Gazette representative is unable to attend the roadshow, but comment and photographs from anyone there would be greatly appreciated.
