Accident still waiting to happen!

2018-07-11 06:01

SIR, there is a serious accident waiting to happen on the Greytown to Muden road, at the Greytown High School pupil crossing.

Several years ago, before the road was re-tarred, the crossing was clearly marked and there was a traffic calming hump. The pupils were also assisted across the traffic by a municipal traffic cop.

The road was re-tarred, the hump was not replaced, and the traffic department stopped assisting the children. When a horrific accident occurs, and children are killed or mutilated, the usual platitudes will be trotted out by the authorities that the matter must receive the highest attention, and then...nothing. No one will bother to assess the situation and make the kids’ lives safer.

Now, with school holidays, it is an ideal time to put in a hump and paint lines. It is also an ideal time for the senior municipal traffic authorities to draw up a roster and ensure that the kids get to school safely once schools re-open. A reply and action from the mayor or municipal officials would be welcome.

CONCERNED PARENTS

EDITOR’S NOTE: Gazette headlined a front page story , “Accident waiting to happen”, after a Greytown High School girl got knocked and injured at the pick up point. Parents also complained that municipal traffic officers on point duty there were not early enough to control the bulk of vehicles and students. For a while they were on time...who really cares?
