A LARGE crowd lining the streets of Greytown enjoyed the formality of the traditional ceremony held last Saturday.

Umvoti Mounted Rifles exercised its Freedom of Entry to Greytown, which was granted to them in 1954 while Air Force Base Durban and 15 Squadron were granted the honour of Freedom of Entry to Greytown.

There were many highlights - the stirring music of the band, the lighting of the flame of armour, general salute, inspection of the parade, the uncasing of the 15 Squadron colours. The many who had waited along the route enjoyed the parade, which included mounted and mechanised columns, and the SAAF fly past. After the proceedings, Mr Oscar Zondi reports that at a function hosted by Umvoti Mayor, Thami Ngubane in the town hall, families of Umkhonto weSizwe from Enhalalakahle were also honoured as was Mr Milton Chonco for his role during the transitional period.

Among those present were Inkosi Bafana Zondi, Inkosi Dlomo, Umvoti chief magistrate, Mr Jabulani Masikane, SAPS station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Mchunu, chief of the Airforce Lieutenant-General Msimang and Major General Mbambo Chief of Airforce Operations.
