IT all started in Hermannsburg in 1999 and has become a widespread popular event throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

The aQuellé Hermannsburg Mudman is the first in the aQuellé Mudman series – one of the most popular multi-sport events in KZN, offering a broad range of categories that cater for top athletes, weekend “sportsters” and relay teams.

It is an off-road multi-sport event with running, swimming or canoeing and cycling. The first Mudman was held at Hermannsburg in 1999. Established as a school in 1856, Hermannsburg School is the oldest existing independent school in KwaZulu-Natal and Mike Terry, a teacher at the school, developed the idea of hosting a Mudman.

In 2003 two other schools, Epworth Preparatory School for Boys and Girls and Cordwalles Preparatory School for Boys, copied the idea and in 2004 the three schools agreed to work together and transform the three separate Mudman competitions into a series.

All Mudman are organised and run by staff, parents and pupils of each school. As such it brings these groups together in a mutual enterprise, building school spirit and raising funds for each school.

aQuellé is the loyal and devoted sponsor of the Mudman series as a whole.

Notable competitors in the series over the years have included Rebecca der Linde, Springbok athlete Russel Kennedy, Ocean Warrior Matt Bouman, Olympic silver medallist Terence Parkin, Roan Exelby, Alan Martin, Carol Rolando, Jean-Paul van der Linde, Terence Mitchell, Alida Schutte, Anton Storm, Lee Cumming, Ken Curr and Suzette Botha.

The Mudman is not only for serious athletes, it is also an opportunity to give first-timers a taste of the action. Our aim is to encourage more people to get outdoors and enjoy a day of family fun in a safe and secure environment. We want to create an amazing experience for the whole family. You can choose different options in doing your triathlon. It is open to all ages, from pre-primary to pensioners - nobody needs to sit at home.

To make the day an amazing experience for the whole family there is also a mini-Mudman, called the Mudskipper where children under 12 compete in different age groups.

Here you can see three year olds riding their tricycles, four year olds paddling with all their might through the pool and dads or moms running with their offspring through the finish line.

But the most rewarding sight is the proud smile when they get their medals.

This event consists of a full distance: 750m swim or 2,5km paddle/20km MTB/5km trail run. Half distance: 375m swim or 1,75km paddle/10km MTB/2.5km trail run. The full and half distance can be completed as an individual or in a team.

So, what are you waiting for - the countdown has started. Take up the challenge in 2018 and participate in the Mudman Series.
