Ambush leaves two dead

2018-10-10 06:04

TWO Fidelity guards who were part of a convoy escorting a consignment of cigarettes on the R74 between Greytown and Muden died in a hail of bullets when they came under attack by a group of gunmen near the Mount Ernestina School at approximately 8.30 am on Friday morning.

A group of about 12 gunmen allegedly shot out the tyres and windows of the Fidelity vehicle, forcing it off the road.

The attackers then allegedly shot and killed the guards who were still in the vehicle.

The vehicle transporting the cigarettes was forced to turn onto a gravel road heading towards Keate’s Drift near Tugela Ferry.

The occupants of the delivery van were forced to off-load the consignment of cigarettes into a Toyota Hilux, an Isuzu bakkie, and another unidentified vehicle.

Once the vehicles were loaded, the attackers, all armed with high calibre weapons, sped off into the hinterland with their ill-begotten hoard, leaving behind the traumatised victims who made their way to the Muden police station to report the inci- dent.

Police conducted an extensive search of the area following the report.

Fidelity Security Group Specialised Services manager Morne Du Toit confirmed the incident and stated that the company was working closely with the police to pursue any leads that might assist with the arrest of the gunmen.

“Our sincere and deepest condolences are with the families of both of our brave officers who lost their lives in the line of duty,” stated Du Toit.

The names of the deceased will only be released once their next of kin have been contacted.

SAPS are conducting ongoing inves-tigations but no arrests had been made at the time of going to press.
