ANC candidate shot at

2018-05-02 06:01

ANC Inkosi Bhambatha deputy regional secretary Ntombi Ngubane was fortunate to escape unhurt when shots were fired at a vehicle she was travelling in as she was about to leave a branch general meeting (BGM) called to nominate preferred candidates for leadership positions.

A case of discharging a firearm in public and malicious damage to property has been opened at the Matimatolo Police Station.

The meeting, last week, was held in the
Vikindlala Hall in the Mbulwane area.

It is reported that a group supporting one of the proposed regional chairperson candidates had decided to boycott the meeting in the hope that there would not be a quorum. However, there was a quorum and the stay aways then stormed the meeting, demanding to see the membership roll and “tempers flared”.

It was alleged that the shots had been fired by Umvoti speaker, Wilson Khoza's bodyguard — however, Khoza said that the body guard was not on duty when the incident happened.

The regional secretary said that the party was assessing the situation “we seriously discourage such conduct”. Earlier in April a BGM in Umvoti Ward 7, in the Enhlalakahle Hall also ended in chaos with the meeting actually collapsing before it started when members questioned why Umvoti municipal security guards were present — Umvoti Mayor Thami
Ngubane said that they were there in their personal capacity. But the angry members tore up the membership roll and the Public Order Police Unit had to be called in.
