JUST imagine, a lady is walking along a street in Estcourt and sees a copy of the Greytown Gazette on the ground. She picks it up, looks at the front page and says: “But I walk past that machine every day.”

So, in what can only be described as an incredible series of happenings, she is now R20 000 better off, the Craigieburn pipeline contractors are delighted at the recovery of the machine, and so is the insurance company.

Three weeks ago the Greytown Gazette of October 25 headlined on the front page “R20 000 Reward for return of pipeline machine”.

On the previous Friday night some rather brazen thieves had made off with an earthmoving Traxcavator Caterpillar parked on the Greytown-Mooi River road after bundling the night watchman into the boot of a vehicle. Otto Zimmerman from contractors Cerimele Mantombana Joint Venture, announced that a R20 000 reward would be paid for information leading to the recovery of the machine.

Security firms and police searched, but with no luck and it was assumed the machine was probably no longer in the country.

Then last Saturday Otto got this call from Estcourt (his cell number was in the article) and the contractors were there very rapidly.

Incredibly the machine is intact with only the batteries removed. Evidently the machine had been dumped literally in the middle of nowhere on a dirt road between Mooi River and Estcourt.

How’s that for a good news story for a change.
