LAST Tuesday was a highlight in the lives of 69 families in Townlands and Woolnager as electricity was switched on in their homes for the first time.

The mayor, speaker and councillors Njoko, Gwala, Mayat and Madonsela visited 10 of the households that were beneficiaries of the electrification project that was started in June and was completed on November 15.

After the switching on the Townlands community was addressed by the mayor.

A press release issued on behalf of Umvoti Municipality by Siqalokuhle Media states, “This is one of the municipality’s best infrastructure projects and will alleviate the plight of more than 300 people as access to electricity is critical for growth, economic equality and social cohesion.”

The project not only brought light to the community, but also created employment for 40 people in both Townlands and Woolnager and two have been hired permanently by the contractor, Sibgem.

In 2016, when the mayor and the Exco began their new term of office, they committed themselves to ensuring that every household in Umvoti is electrified within the next five years.

A total of 27% of households within the Umvoti Municipality are still without electricity.

A significant number of these households are in rural areas, but provision is being made to ensure that these homes see the light in the not-so-distant future.
