ARMED robbers were arrested in Greytown after they entered a supermarket on Bell Street and held up the owners and customers on April 28.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said a group of armed suspects entered a supermarket and stole airtime vouchers and an undisclosed amount of cash at gunpoint.

“Police officers who were in the vicinity were alerted and immediately responded. A total of six men aged between 27 and 44 were apprehended as they attempted to flee the scene on foot.

“Four unlicensed firearms which included an AK47 rifle, shotgun and two pistols were seized. Police also seized 30 rounds of ammunition from the suspects. The suspects will appear in the Greytown Magistrates Court tomorrow where they will be facing charges for being in illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as robbery.”

KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula applauded a swift reaction by the police.

“This arrest will serve as warning to criminals who are targeting businesses in KwaZulu-Natal. Police officers are deployed strategically across the province to enable them to respond swiftly to reports of criminality,” Jula said.
