POLICE in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating a case of robbery after a group of unknown suspects broke into the shops at Tugela Ferry Mall on Saturday night.

According to police, the armed suspects accosted the security guards at the mall before breaking into the shops.

Shoppers who spoke to the Gazette wanted the police to launch an urgent investigation.

Resident Mondli Sabela said: “I saw a group of shoppers gathered outside the mall when I came in the morning. I was shocked when I saw that shops were looted.

“This is the first incident [like this] in Msinga since the mall has opened.

“The police must investigate this matter and all the suspects [must] get heavy sentences.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said: “It is alleged that the males used grinders and crowbars to break into the business premises and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.

“A case of robbery was opened at the Msinga police station for investigation.”

At the time of going to press, no arrests were made.

Attempts to get a comment from management of the mall were unsuccessful and the spokesperson did not respond to questions at the time of going to press.
