THERE is no stopping the freight train that is Greytown High School athletes as they continue to take out their opponents wherever they go. They enjoyed fantastic successes at the KZN Youth and Junior Championships that took place over the weekend of February 22 to February 24.

Athletes from all over the province descended on Kingspark Athletics Stadium for three days of action in typical hot and humid Durban weather.

There was no shortage of anticipation and adrenalin as six of our athletes took to the field. We entered 11 events between the six athletes. Of these 11 events, 10 produced medal finishes. A total of five gold, three silver and two bronze medals were proudly brought home — a truly wonderful achievement for our athletes and a testament to their dedication and hard work.

Our athletes and their achievements included: Nkazimulo Mzolo — Bronze Boys U17 Triple Jump; Khaya Nduli — Silver Boys U17 High Jump; Zhane Mngadi — Gold Boys U19 Triple Jump (with a new personal best distance of 13.37m); Mongezi Langa — Gold Boys U17 High Jump; Akhona Mathonsi — Gold Girls U19 100m (with a new personal best time of 12.44s), Gold Girls U19 High Jump, and Silver Girls U19 Long Jump; and Siyabulela Xulu — Gold Boys U17 Triple Jump, Silver Boys U17 Long Jump, and Bronze Boys U17 200m.

We are even more proud at the announcement that both Siyabulela (Long and Triple jump) and Akhona (100m) have been selected to represent KZN at the ASA Nationals in Paarl, Western Cape at the end of this month. We wish them all the best as they represent our school at a National level.

Other than Nationals, the summer athletics season has come to an end. We are exceedingly proud of our athletes for hoisting our school’s name high and we look forward to term three when they will again go out against other schools in and around our district and province to show them what we are made of.
