Birth flowers for February

2018-02-07 06:00

Violets and primrose are the birthflowers for February.

The violet signifies watchfulness, loyalty, and faithfulness and giving a violet to someone means you will always be there for them. Ancient Greeks used violets in their wines, foods and medicines, and loved the flower so much that it became the symbol of Athens.

Used in baking - the petals are coated with sugar and used on cakes, chocolates and pastries as sweet garnishes.

The edible flowers are actually fairly nutritious. The petals and stems of violets contain high amounts of vitamin C, an antioxidant that can improve the immune system and overall health. In fact, the flower has more vitamin C than most other vegetables.

The flower has a lovely scent that seems to go away after just one sniff. That's because the flowers contain a chemical called ionine which desensitizes the nose and sense of smell temporarily.

Legend is that Napoleon Bonaparte declared violets his own signature flower, and used the blooms to cover his wife Josephine's grave when she died in 1814 and in fact, was called Corporal Violet by friends after promising he would return from his exile on Elba before violet season.

The other February flower is the primrose, which lets someone know you can not live without them.

According to an old English superstition a child who ate a Primrose might see a fairy.

The Greeks called the primrose “flower of the 12 gods” believing it had the power to heal diseases including paralysis. -
