Lockstep Author : Karl Schroeder:IT was only a matter of time before I picked this up. Call me skin-deep, but not only does Schroeder come highly recommended in inner sci-fi circles, he also has some of the coolest-looking covers gracing his work (much to the chagrin of everyone who ever told me how not to judge a book). After 14 000 years, Toby McGonigal is awakened to find humanity having successfully spread out into the stars. They’ve achieved this with “locksteps”, systematic and prolonged periods of hibernation that both control the consumption of resources on developing planets and nullify the endless travel time taken between star systems. If catching up on several millennia worth of history wasn’t hard enough, Toby soon discovers that the locksteps are monopolised by his brother and sister, and that their plan for the future of humanity was predicated on him not returning. With a protagonist destined for greatness, a ragtag group of teenagers challenging the status quo, and some family infighting thrown in for good measure, Lockstep may be a young-adult tale at heart. Still, mind-bending technology, awesome world-building, and a story that deepens with every page provide us with theater and spectacle that elevate it into so much more. - Omar Sayeed.
