Brave

Author: Rose McGowan

TALKS about Deadline Hollywood, if ever there was a decade that necessitated change in Tinseltown, this may be it. No longer are artists happy to participate in an industry that exhibits the values and expressions of a select few, nor do they want a global and infamously indoctrinating medium to be apathetic to the struggles and complexities of the other.

In Brave, exorcised actor and activist Rose McGowan exposes the movie industry’s (now infamous) exploitation of women, from its lower-paying wages, to near-inescapable sexualisation, to an integrated network of disregard towards mistreatment and abuse.

Along with her life story (including the men she’s encountered over the years), McGowan effectively articulates here the challenges faced daily by talented and sincere women trying to get ahead in a male-dominated workplace.

Brave reads less like a planned essay and more a verbal rant transcript, giving her memoir a delivery that comes off as raw, authentic and electric.

McGowan is clearly resentful of the system and is now dedicated to speaking out against those who are perpetuating the Dream Machine, be they silent protesters or the perfection-seeking cinema goers themselves.

A word of warning before purchase: this book may forever change the way you watch movies.
