TWO teenagers appeared in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court Monday on charges relating to the murder of Sarel Theron at his home on Mistley Estate Seven Oaks last Sunday night, 3 July.

Theron, who was Mondi Midands Safety Facilitator, was found badly beaten, stabbed and strangled last Tuesday morning by a colleague who had become concerned when he had not reported for work on the Monday.

It is alleged that at least three attackers were involved – a laptop, cellphone and other items had been stolen. The attackers had attempted to force the safe out of a wall by using one of two vehicles there to ram the safe loose, but were unsuccessful.

In a joint operation launched by Field Security and Greytown SAPS members - Sergeant Mkhebela, Constable Mkhize Warrant Officer Mlambo and Nkosinathi Zuma, two of the three alleged killers were tracked and arrested. In a report to the Greytown Gazette, Field Security chief, Sudesh Maharaj said the tracking had started on Wednesday morning and by early evening, one of the 18- year-olds had been found in his room behind a Seven Oaks mission and arrested. Property allegedly belonging to the victim was recovered including a cellphone, two packets of unopened cigarettes and a shaving kit in a bag. The alleged murder weapon, a dagger, was also recovered. The second suspect, also an 18 year old, was arrested several hours later and a laptop recovered.
Following their appearance in Greytown Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of murder and house robbery, the two accused were remanded in custody until the next hearing on 18th July.

At the time of going to press an intensive manhunt was underway for the third suspect.

A funeral service for Sarel Theron is to be held on Thursday 14th at the Oasis Church Howick.
