Burst water pipes a nightmare for Cooper Street residents

2019-03-27 06:00

RESIDENTS were frustrated as the bursting of aged water pipes in Copper Street, Greytown left many homes with no water for the past three weeks.

According to residents, a new plastic water pipeline was constructed in 2012 in a bid to replace the ageing asbestos pipes. Since then, the pipe has not been replaced. Pipes frequently burst in the upper and lower parts of Cooper Street.

Nomonde Nzimande, from uMzinyathi Municipality, told Greytown Gazette that the municipality is aware about burst water pipes and was working on a long-term measure to replace the ageing infrastructure.

“We have been having several burst pipes in Greytown lately. Part of the problem is we have been water shedding for four years straight and we only opened the water on 18 February after we had reached above 90% on Lake Merthley.

“During these four years we were water shedding, most of our valves were covered while the local municipality were resurfacing roads in Greytown.

“As a short-term measure to reduce these burst pipes, we started the process of servicing and replacing our PRV’s, which haven’t been used for close to four years, so we can reduce pressure on the pipes.

“Our long-term measure would be to do pipe replacements,” said Nzimande.

Nzimande urged Greytown residents to be patient during this process, adding that: “Every time there is a burst pipe, we have to close the water in order to do repairs.”
