IN an ever-changing world it is increasingly important to teach children to embrace differences. Cultural awareness and tradition play important roles in helping young children develop a positive sense of identity and build self-esteem.

At the New Hanover International Festival last week, the Grade 3 children dressed up in traditional clothing from different countries and sampled traditional foods together with family and friends.

They sang anthems and folk songs from their countries before sharing interesting facts which they had discovered while doing their research this term.

Developing a strong foundation of belonging and acceptance through cultural celebration and education helps children to create a diverse social network while transitioning into adulthood.
