Children crossing road concerns

2016-03-23 06:00

Sir, THE letter from Concerned Parents in last week's Greytown Gazette refers.

I certainly share the concerns expressed for the safety of the children crossing the road and in respect of the traffic official on duty. The official wears no reflective clothing and he is often virtually invisible against the backdrop of trees and the rising sun on the approach from the west, especially if he is standing there on his own without any children crossing.

The situation certainly needs urgent and innovative steps to be taken. Flashing lights, rumble strips, warning signs placed in the centre of the road on either side are certainly excellent suggestions. Speed humps, however, are an extreme irritation bearing in mind that children cross for perhaps between 40 minutes and an hour a day while for the remaining 23 hours motorists have to contend with a speed hump which rarely seems to comply with regulations if there are ever any applicable regulations.

The R74 has in recent years seen a proliferation of speed humps, which cause much irritation and frustration, especially when towing a trailer or caravan and the journey from the N3 to the coast is certainly taking considerably longer than previously.

I appeal to the traffic authorities to find a more innovative solution. Why not create a drop-off zone off the R74 where children can disembark and reach the school without having to cross the road or why not a subway under the road surface?

Please think out of the box, but no speed humps.
