COMMUNITY NPO hit by thieves, thrice

STAFF at the Umvoti Aids Centre are hoping to recover some stolen property and raise money to repair the boundary fencing after the centre was broken into for the third time this year on Friday.

In April, thieves stole metal poles and fencing from the centre and gained entry through one of the room windows.

In early June, blankets were stolen from the centre. They were then targeted again on Friday when thieves removed the remainder of the fencing and poles, leaving a huge dent in the centre’s budget for repairs. The centre says it is still in the process of reporting the latest incident.

Speaking to the Gazette, Umvoti Aids Centre manager Dumi Magwevana said the incidents have caused some unrest among staff and safety concerns have been raised.

“We fear that the next thing that is going to happen is that these criminals will steal our cars.

“We have to spend more than R13 000 to repair the fence that has been stolen. We are an non-profit organisation and this money has to be raised. It could even have been used for the children’s needs.

“We have people living in the centre and our cars park here. We don’t feel safe anymore. The lives of our staff members are in danger,” Magwevana said.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “Charges of theft and burglary are being investigated by Greytown SAPS after poles and blankets were stolen at a business premises on Bell Street in Greytown. Both cases are still under investigation.”
