Craigieburn pipeline or pipe dream?

2017-12-13 06:00

FOR the past three years or so the Greytown Gazette has regularly reported on the status of the Craigieburn pipeline, the proposed answer to the town’s water problems instituted by Umzinyathi District municipality as the area’s water service provider.

However, the project has become more commonly known to long suffering water rationed Greytonians as the Craigieburn pipe dream due to corrupt contractors and fairytale completion dates.

But this year on-the-ball contractors were appointed and the month of January was being mentioned as the start of water flowing through the pipeline.

The Greytown Gazette requested an update from Umzinyathi – as follows: “The status of the Craigieburn pipeline is that contractors are busy laying the pipeline. However, one of the contractors (Icon Construction) was stopped by the community of Mooi Mpofana municipality from working.

“The community of ward 4, Mooi Mpofana has demanded an access road, a dam and jojo tanks from Mooi Mpofana Municipality before they can allow the contractor to continue working. “Mooi Mpofana is unable to provide these services hence the stalemate.
The contractor has since de-established from site and will only come back once this matter has been resolved.”

Umzinyathi DM obtained a court interdict from the PMB High Court to stop the community from continuing with the protests, but the community has indicated that they will ignore the court interdict.
