Do we need to see a child killed before something is done?

2018-03-07 06:02

On Tuesday, February 27, I had the terrible experience of seeing a young girl from Greytown High School hit by a car. (It was a hit and run, by the way.)

She was walking on the pedestrian crossing, so was quite in the right. The intersection in question has been up for discussion with the municipality and traffic department for a long time now.

How do I know this? Because as a parent representative of St David’s school, I personally have met with certain people about the situation and we have copies of numerous letters that have been sent over the past few years.

As it is a huge concern for teachers and parents alike, numerous efforts have been made to get the municipality to do something about the road to make it safer for our chil- dren.

Until today, very little has been done. A traffic officer was appointed to help our children cross the road safely, but like this morning, the officer was a little too late.

Children are being dropped off from as early as 6.30 am to 6.45 am.

Traffic on that road is at a peak before 7 am.

Do we need to see a child killed before we see drastic measures put in place? I honestly hope not.

As for the driver of the car who hit the young girl and then left the scene without even checking if she is okay —you, sir, are a disgrace to all.

I am praying that drastic measures will soon be taken on this road.
