Domestic workers’ wage increase 2018

ANNUAL wage increases for domestic workers were announced by the Department of Labour in December – a 5% increase on the 2017 rates.

This determination came into operation on January 1 and is effective until November 30.

New minimum wages for Umvoti. which is classified as Area Bare:

Domestic workers who work 27 ordinary hours a week or more:

Hourly rate: R11.89

Weekly rate : R534.91

Monthly rate: R2 317.75

Domestic workers who work less than 27 ordinary hours a week:

Hourly rate: R14.03

Weekly rate: R378.83

Monthly rate: R1 641.48

According to the legislation, domestic workers should work no more than 45 hours a week, no more than nine hours a day if they work a five-day week, or more than eight hours a day if they work for more than five days a week.

Overtime is limited to 15 hours a week and no more than three hours on any one day, and its double pay on Sundays or public holidays.

Employers whose domestics live on the property may deduct 10% of their salary for accommodation, providing the accommodation complies with the minimum standards laid down in the legislation.

Employers must register their employees for the Unemployment Insurance Fund, and are advised to sign an employment contract with their domestic worker.
