PUPILS from Ntandoyethu Primary School went on an informative and interesting educational tour on July 26.

The 27 Grade 5 and Grade 6 pupils, accompanied by teachers Mr Thusini and Miss Mbuli, first went to the eThekwini Water Treatment plant where educational officer Mr Singh gave them an overview of all the works done in the professional field. He explained the stages in water purification, including collection and screening, and taught them about secondary treatments which remove fine solids and the majority of contaminants using filters, coagulation and membranes. Next was a visit to the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve where they enjoyed watching and learning about different trees and animals, including zebra, springbok, and bushbuck. They also had an opportunity to visit the nature reserves’ dam.

After that they visited the Durban Natural Science Museum where they learnt about all kinds of birds found in South Africa, even the extinct ones. Their tour ended with a visit to uShaka Marine World, where pupils watched beautiful dolphins while enjoying the Wet and Wild experience. They also had an opportunity to walk along the beach and watch ships entering and leaving the harbour. Miss Nomfundo from uShaka Marine World taught pupils about water preservation and averting pollution and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

School management and organisers would like to thank the pupils, parents and the following sponsors: Greytown Pannar Seed, Greytown Mascor Toyota, Brazo17, Zakwe liquor store, Dr Thusi, Ward 3 Councillor Mr Hlophe, Technohub internet cafe, and, eThembisweni Taxi Association for their donations — this tour wouldn’t have been a success without them. — Supplied.
