ANDILE Ngubane and Sanelisiwe Dumakude hold gold medals for the 1200 m race

Their dream is one day to be KZN champions and Andile and Sanelisiwe have begun the journey to that dream.

The two, who attend Ekhamanzi Primary School, took part in the uMgungundlovu District Primary and High Schools athletics championship event in Pietermaritzburg on February 19. Andile won a gold medal in the U11 boys’ 1 200 m race and Sanelisiwe won a gold medal in the U12 girls’ 1 200 m race.

As the uMgungundlovu District champions, they then competed in the KZN Provincial Athletics Schools Championships last week.

Although the two do not have many facilities at their school, which is in a poor rural area, they still outshone their competitors.

Thanks go to the principal of Ekhamanzi Primary, Mr E.B. Ngubane, SMT and teachers who always strive to promote the talents of pupils, and most importantly to Mr N.F. Mkhize who coaches these young champions. Miss L.B. Sithole, the sports’ co-ordinator, said that it is difficult to train pupils in rural areas because of the poor infrastructure and not having sponsors, but nothing can stand in the way if you have a dream to fulfil.
