A CELEBRATORY mood accompanied by loud cheers reverberated across Keates Drift in Msinga when KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala, opened a factory that closed its doors 25 years ago.

What used to be a Bata Shoes factory in Keates Drift became a white elephant that, for some two decades, lay in ruins. It is now a bustling hive of activity and a clothing factory employing 137 people.

The MEC officially launched the women-owned UMsinga Clothing factory on Monday, April 29. The factory now also employs 50 youth, who will produce sanitary pads to mitigate the problem of young girls in rural areas that miss school during their menstrual cycle.

“We are grateful for her vision and wish to thank her for all her hard work.

“We hope this factory will do a lot to eradicate poverty in the area. We are also proud that it employs women.

“We will continue to support initiatives like these as they become the engine of development,” Zikalala said. — Supplied.
