Escapees shot dead near Greytown

TWO of the 16 prisoners who escaped from a prison in Gauteng were killed in a shoot-out with KZN police last Tuesday — the 16 were awaiting trial for serious crimes including murder, rape and robbery.

The prisoners escaped through a pipe shaft from the Johannesburg Correctional Centre, which is also called “Sun City”. They used an object to break the wall and then went over the fence.

The Organised Crime Unit and Provincial Tracking Unit, had received information that two of the escapees were traveling from Msinga to Pietermaritzburg. Spokesperson for the KZN Hawks Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the vehicle was spotted on the R33 — the suspects opened fire on the Police who returned fire in self-defence. Both suspects were killed in the shoot out — the police found a 9 mm pistol and a toy gun. The vehicle they were in has not been reported as stolen.

An intensive manhunt was launched to find the remaining 14 prisoners — members of the public were warned not to approach any of the escapees and report to the nearest police station.
