FOLLOWING the article on Alzheimer’s in last week's Greytown Gazette, Gertie Kotze of Dalton contacted the editor about the "fiddle mats" she has been making for people suffering from Alzheimer’s and also for children with cerebral palsy.

Gertie is well known in Umvoti for her culinary skills and creative needlework. Each mat is different and has a range of items and textures which keep the individual occupied. Health professionals say that therapeutic activities should focus on the person's previous interests and take advantage of the person's remaining skills while minimising the impact of skills which may have been compromised.

It is accepted structured individualised activities that involve and interest the Alzheimer’s patient may reduce many of the disturbing behavioural symptoms such as agitation, anger frustration, depression, wandering and rummaging.

So far 38 mats have been sent throughout South Africa, and Gertie does not charge for them, only for the postage. More information can be obtained at alpigeta@ab
