Fire association asks residents to burn responsibly

2019-02-06 06:00

THE Umvoti Fire Protection Association warned residents to be considerate when piling and burning brushwood. The association is making this call to curb wildfires on farms.

Fire Protection Officer for the association Avela Mana said: “We want to remind Umvoti residents to be vigilant when burning brushwood and piling.

“The association is running a campaign about brush root burning in order to caution residents and farm workers about wildfire,” Mana said.

> Tight and compact piles

> For fast, easy ignition and rapid spread, the piles should have sufficient fine fuels (ie dry grass, leaves, needles, etc)

> Piling should be done as soon as possible after harvesting; this will assist in nutrient retention

> Piles should be sufficiently far from a stand, to avoid spotting and tree scorching

> Large stems and branches should be broken down and piled parallel, butts out to provide a tight compact pile

> Hand piles should be between two to three meters in diameter, and one to two meters high where possible.

> Piling should be done well in advance of burning to allow material to dry out so it will burn completely.

> Hand piling and burning along roads, trails, and around recreational or other public areas can help achieve aesthetics objectives by improving the appearance of an area.

Residents are asked to report to Firehawk and Golf 911 at 033 417 2911 before proceeding with burning.
