THE mansion of Godfrey Mavundla, tycoon and former mayor of Greytown was gutted by fire on Friday night.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and it is alleged that it erupted in one of the rooms around 9 pm, at the front of the house.

“There were children in the house when the fire broke out. Thankfully they were not hurt and managed to escape. It is not clear what could have caused the fire,” said Mavundla.

Firefighters from Umvoti Fire Station were called out and responded, however the home owner expressed his concern about the shoddy and lack of certain equipment that firefighters used. “Community members came out and used buckets of water to extinguish the fire. Firefighters from Umvoti Municipality then arrived to assist us. I was shocked to see that they [firefighters] didn’t even have torches, let alone the proper breathing apparatus. They used their cellphone torches for light,” he said.

Mavundla, however, thanked firefighters for their hard work saying: “If they did not arrive, I think the entire house would have been gutted by the fire. Three fire engines arrived, but one of them broke down in front of my house,” he said.

The fire engine had reportedly not been towed and still remained outside his property on Tuesday morning, before print deadline.

Chief Fire Officer for Umvoti Fire station Xolani Ndawonde said two fire engines and one private vehicle responded.

“When we arrived at the scene the front of the house was on fire, but the fire did not spread into other rooms. It took us almost an hour to extinguish the flames. “The cause of the fire is unknown and investigations are currently underway,” he said.
