DRAMA unfolded inside the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on September 23 as two women who had came to attend a bail hearing for a rape suspect were involved in a physical altercation.

The two women had gone to the court to witness the bail application of a suspect who had allegedly raped an ANC volunteer at the Mayoral House in Greytown.

According to witnesses, one of the family member’s of the rape victim tried to attack the suspect when he was coming into the courtroom.

A source said: “The other woman, who was a relative of the suspect, intervened. She punched her and a fight ensued.”

Members of the ANC Women’s League were in court to support the family of the victim who was raped on September 14.

A group of more than 200 residents and ANCWL members protested outside the court to oppose bail for the suspect.

The suspect, whose name cannot be published until he has pled, appeared in court to file a bail application.

The suspect is a close relative of Umvoti Mayor Thami Ngubane.

When the Gazette reached out to the KZN Police media centre to confirm if the victim’s relative had opened a case of assault, police spokesperson Nqobile Ngwala said the police were unable to comment about the incident.

In speaking about the bail application, Gwala said: “The complainant alleged that she was at Cooper Street in Greytown when she was allegedly raped by a known suspect. The suspect (31) was arrested by Greytown Police for rape and the docket was transferred to the Greytown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units for further investigation. He appeared in the Greytown Magistrates Court on September 16 and was remanded in custody for bail application.”

The matter was adjourned until October 8 after the suspect’s legal representative failed to attend the hearing.
