FOUR women were shot dead in the Machunwini area in Msinga and a fifth victim was taken to hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the forehead.

According to police and residents, the motive for the attack has not been established.

Ward councillor Mathanzima Sithole called for calm and asked the community to not take the law into their hands.

“Residents are fuming about this and want the suspect who killed these innocent women arrested. In all the incidents, nothing was taken from the victims. We are not certain of the motive of the attack.

“We urge residents who may have information that will led to the arrest of the suspect [or suspects] to give the leads to the police.” Sithole said.

The victims hailed from four families; namely the Nkala, Masoka, Mdladla and Mchunu families; and were killed while they were asleep at their homes.

A fifth victim is fighting for their life in hospital.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said: “Charges of murder and attempted murder are being investigated by Msinga SAPS after four women were fatally shot by unknown suspects at Machunwini area, Msinga.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.”
