THE annual Mascor-sponsored Roley Hill men’s doubles tennis tournament was held on Sunday December 10 and participants enjoyed playing on the newly resurfaced tennis courts, thanks to the support of the club’s tournament sponsors.

David and Ron Hill, sons of the late Roley, submitted the following via e-mail to provide some history to this prestigious tennis tournament.

“Back in 1977, Ron Hill and I (David), decided to honour and surprise our 71-year-old father, who had served a lifetime with the Greytown Tennis club, and sauntered into H. Wust Jewellery in Pine Street Greytown, and asked for biggest trophy he had - and that is the one we bought, paying 50/50 each.

“Many of those still present at the club, who remember Roley Hill, will tell you that he was a very self-effacing man, who never liked to be fussed over, never liked the limelight, so when an elated Ronnie and I told him of our gesture to honour him with the trophy he was definitely not impressed.”

Without the sponsors, this tournament would have not been a such a popular annual fixture for the past 40 years.

A big thanks to Mascor and those before - Umvoti Tyres and Batteries, Douglas Crowe, etc., Roley Hill Tournament has been a showcase for good men’s doubles tennis.

Roley died in 1986 aged 80, but he watches every game played on Greytown tennis courts as his ashes were scattered on the banks between the top and bottom courts, and his name appears on the honours board at the club.

The ultimate winners were Reece Newman and Alex Kocheleff from Pietermaritzburg, winners of the A Section.

Local coach Derek Brown and partner Darin Michau were close runners-up. This year Greytown boasted two couples in the A Section, the father-and-son combination of Clive and Kyle Edkins, and Colin Corbishley and Michael Chiazzari.

The B section was won by Wynand Lens and Darrell Hopkins from Valley Tennis Club. Runners-up were Qaphela Mzila and Ashley Cotterrell.

The C Section winners were Wayne Schnaar and Craig Bekker, with Ryan Gardner and Wolf Binder as runners- up.

The tennis at this year’s tournament was once again of a high standard and the Greytown ladies once again outdid themselves with the catering.

Thank you to sponsor Mascor and catering convener Joanie Koller and her team of helpers, including Angela in the kitchen.
