RESIDENTS of the Cool Air area in uMshwathi lodged a complaint against uMshwathi Municipality about skips in front of their homes that are not being emptied.

Locals claimed that, for the past two months, the skips have become a dump site.

Pastor Sean Thaver said: “I cannot even host visitors. The smell coming from the skip with all kinds of waste in front of my house is unbearable. The smell coming from the skip full of household waste and debris make it difficult for me to enjoy my breakfast.

“I have approached uMshwathi Municipality to remove it, but I am always given a go around. The municipality must remove it.

“Burning waste in front of our houses will never be a solution. As residents of this area we feel sidelined by the municipality.”

Another resident, Krishan Ramdewu, said his family has used their own cars to empty the skips that were overflowing, adding: “All we need as residents of this area is service delivery.

“We appeal to the municipality to come and remove the skips in the residential areas.”

DA PR councillor Raganie Thomas-Govender said she received complaints from residents about the overflowing skips.

During a site inspection on Thursday, March 14, Thomas-Govender interacted with the residents to get their first-hand experiences.

Spokesperson for uMshwathi Municipality Sibusiso Mkhithi said residents are not putting the waste into the skips.

“Four skips were provided in the Cool area for the community, however they dumped outside them. They also dump rubble and garden waste instead of household waste. The municipality truck does provide services of waste removal in the Cool Air area.

The municipality is in the process of procuring the dumpster rules for skips to help combat their misuse.

“The municipality is in a process of a cleanup campaign within the entirety of the Cool Air area.

“We will have an environmental awareness campaign on how to use skips and sort waste from the source. We hope that it will be a good solution in this case.

“Some of the community members use skips incorrectly as they throw in the wrong waste materials,” Mkhithi said.
